Man made objects and structures have throughout history played a part in marking boundaries, heralding a persons arrival to a new place.

They serve to communicate, good or bad, the aspirations or expectations of the community that built them.

The threshold of all the world’s towns, cities, streets and homes communicate to the visitor something of our world view, what we hold dear, what is important in our lives.

We may have inherited images and symbols in our art-work and architecture that no longer reflect the diverse views and aspirations of our changing communities. Some inherited symbols may even be offensive to certain parts of the community.

Artists, architects and designers then have a role in reinterpreting common themes, making meaningful connections within diverse communities, creating a new visual language that communicates aspirations and hopes, tell stories, celebrates, and remembers.
